Volunteers help athletes reach IRONMAN’S finish line
ROCKFORD, Ill. (WIFR) - More than 1,600 volunteers helped make IRONMAN happen in the stateline this past weekend, supporting athletes throughout the swim, bike and run portions of the race.
Organizers say nearly 50 volunteer captains recruited volunteers to fill roles ranging from aid stations and crowd control to water safety along the course.
“It’s just really regarding,” Volunteer Stacey Slintech said. “Giving is always better than receiving. You always get so much out of it.”
For volunteer captain Lisa Miller, one athlete’s journey stood out.
Before race day, Miller came across Kelly’s story on social media. Kelly had attempted to complete an IRONMAN twice before but was unable to finish within the required time limits.
“Her mom’s dream was to do an Ironman,” Miller said. “In 2019, her mom suddenly passed away. She’d tried in two other cities and got pulled off the course both times because of time.”
Miller followed Kelly’s progress throughout the day and eventually met her along the course, offering words of encouragement before she continued toward the finish line.
“I told her how much it touched me that she shared her story and that I believed in her,” Miller said.
Kelly later completed the race, a moment Miller says showed the impact volunteers can have on athletes.
“Having support is sometimes the one last thing you need,” Miller said.
Organizers say volunteer turnout surpassed last year’s total and helped support thousands of athletes competing throughout the weekend.
