NORMAL, Ill. (AP) -- Tiffany King scored nine of her team-high 11 points after halftime, leading the Winchester West Central Cougars to the Girls Class 1A state championship with a 29-26 victory against Hanover River Ridge-Scales Mound.
King scored four points in the first minute after the break Saturday to tie the game at 15. She scored five in the game's final 1:14 to help keep the Wildcats at bay.
A defensive battle peppered with some ragged play from both teams, the score was just 15-11 at halftime. King, Alex Schaad and Andrea Lietz had a combined four points through two quarters but recovered to total 20 in the win.
Whitney Kieffer led the Widcats (29-2) with 17 on 7-of-12 shooting. The rest of the team was just 2-of-21 from the field.
