ROCKFORD (WIFR) -- Christmas may be seven weeks away but some of Santa's Stateline helpers are already turning out some special gifts for American heroes.
Operation for Deployed Military hosted a sew-in at Bethesda Covenant Church.
Members of the Sinnissippi Quilters Guild used all sorts of beautiful fabric to sew Christmas stockings.
They'll be sent to troops deployed in Iraq and Afghanistan.
"I get thank yous every year from the troops because they're so happy the people who don't know them care enough to send them something," said Margarette Steele.
Organizers hope to beat last year's goal of 1,800 stockings.
Nationwide, Operation for Deployed Military sent 14,000 to Afghanistan alone.
