BELVIDERE (WIFR) – An NIU professor and his students are making sure that teens aren’t being left behind when it comes to holiday toy drives.
NIU Communications Director David Henningsen has been helping teens for more than five years by donating gifts to the Lutheran Child and Family Services of Illinois. This year, along with the help of his students, he’s delivering more than 500 gifts including cosmetics, footballs, and board games to teens in the foster care system that are often overlooked during the holidays.
“What I decided to do was work with my students and try to come up with an engaged learning project where we could try to meet that need, where we could try to find gifts for kids in the foster care system who are older that may not be getting age-appropriate gifts otherwise,” says Henningsen.
All the donations collected go towards the LCFS Holiday Drive that has a goal of providing teens more than 1,500 gifts.
