ROCKFORD (WIFR) -- Michael Kleen is now the Republican candidate for Rockford mayor by default. No other candidate has filed for that position in the February Republican primary.
That he became the Republican nominee was a very unlikely event, but it is an event that Kleen believes displays the very best side of the Republican Party. It is a party that values hard work, opportunity, and upward mobility.
“I consider it an honor and a privilege to have this opportunity,” Kleen said, “and I will do my best to run a clean, professional campaign that proposes real and practical solutions to the problems we face.”
Kleen wants to be mayor of Rockford because he sees the great potential of this city waiting to be unleashed, if only it had leadership with the right priorities. “I want to lay down a path to prosperity,” Kleen said, “and I want to make sure that our local government is never an obstacle on that path to prosperity.”
As mayor, Kleen’s number one priority will be making the streets safe. “No real economic recovery is possible without tackling the problem of crime,” he said.
