Fundraiser for Dark Horse Lodge Retreat for Combat Veterans

MOUNT MORRIS (WIFR) -- The memory of a local marine killed in action lives on as his family continues to help other service men and women.

An auction helped raise money for the Dark Horse Lodge. It's in honor of Lance Corporal Alec Catherwood who was killed in Afghanistan in 2010.

Catherwood's family is raising money to build the Dark Horse Lodge, a retreat in Tennessee for combat veterans. It will feature five five-bedroom guest cabins. Each is named for one of the 25 marines killed in Catherwood's unit.

Catherwood’s family hopes the retreat helps prevent suicides.

"If we can provide them a place where they can come and get things off their chest without any fear of judgment then maybe, just maybe we'll be able to have just one that say maybe they were going to but didn't because they found a place where they're accepted,” Catherwood’s mother, Gretchen Catherwood, said.

The group hopes to start construction in 2017.
