WINNEBAGO COUNTY (WIFR) – We could be paying more at the cash register to repair school buildings in Winnebago County and while some disagree with the plan, others say it could save us some cash in the future.
District 205 and other districts are considering a 1% sales tax to help pay off some debt. Organizers say the plan would bring in more than $16 million a year. Right now, we pay a little over 8% in sales tax every time we shop.
“It would be able to lower our property tax by as much as 66 cents. Which we believe would help incentivize people to stay and potentially move to our county. From our perspective, the idea of reducing on property tax holders is something worth considering,” says Superintendent Dr. Ehren Jarrett.
District 205 will discuss putting a referendum on the ballot for the next election. We will have the latest on tonight’s meeting at 10.
