UPDATE: Body Found in Rock River Identified

UPDATE: ROCKFORD (WIFR) ---- The name of the woman whose body was found in the Rock River earlier this month has been revealed.

She's been identified as 36-year-old Memory Griffis of Rockford. Griffis’ body was found on March 9th in the river near the 4800 block of South Main Street.

The cause of death has yet to be determined but the death is under investigation by the Winnebago County Sheriff's Department.


UPDATE: ROCKFORD (WIFR) -- The Winnebago County Coroner's Office is still trying to figure out the identity of the woman whose body was found in the Rock River on Wednesday.

The Coroner's Office says the results of Thursday's autopsy are inconclusive and more tests will need to be done to determine cause of death. The Coroner's Office says the body is of a middle-aged African American woman and it's believed her body has been in the river for several months.

Investigators say there was no trauma noted on her body and there were no identifying marks or tattoos on her body. The Coroner's Office says a forensic odontologist will be called in to try to identify the woman through dental records.

The body was discovered in the Rock River about 15 feet off shore near the 4800 block of South Main Street in Rockford.

The Coroner's Office says the body appears to be that of a female. Investigators say the body was found in the river about 15 feet off shore near the 4800 block of South Main Street in Rockford.

The death is currently under investigation by the Winnebago County Sheriff's Department. An autopsy is pending by the Winnebago County Coroner's Office. Toxicology tests are expected in about two weeks.
