WINNEBAGO, Ill. (WIFR) It's not an easy feat for a high school student to drop their social life during the summer, but that's exactly what Marcus Smith did and now he is a state champion.
Winnebago celebrated the junior golfer Thursday inside its gym with classmates and family there to support him.
Smith shot a 71 this past weekend en route to the 1A title beating out the field by three strokes.
"In this offseason I put in so much work," said Smith. "I barely hung out with my friends and everyone was like "you have no life" and to be honest, I didn't because I was always golfing because I wanted this state championship really bad. I got sixth the previous year and third and I felt like last year should have been my year. Congrats to Tyler Bussert on winning but I wanted to win so this year I felt like it was my year and I really made sure I put in the work and did everything I had to do to get the win."
