Winnebago falls short of first regional title since 2016

WINNEBAGO, Ill. (WIFR) Winnebago could not find the back of the net against Harvard and the second-seeded Lady Indians missed out on their first regional title since 2016, losing 1-0 on Saturday.

The Hornets defense stifled Winnebago (8-10-1), limiting its chances on offense. The Lady Indians came into the match feeling good after scoring seven goals against South Beloit in its regional semifinal.

However, it was the fifth-seeded Hornets who put the lone tally on the board. Daniele McCloud put a cross into the box, Bago's Karli Erdahl failed to clear the ball and Erika Bernal beat Teagan Ferguson with just under 12 to play.

Gwen Franklin put a shot on goal late, but was not much of a threat to go in.

Harvard (4-13-4) won its first ever regional plaque and will face Stillman Valley in the sectional semifinals on Tuesday at Indian Creek.
