IceHogs' Versteeg announces retirement

ROCKFORD, Ill. (WIFR) The Rockford IceHogs announced Sunday the team has mutually parted ways with veteran forward Kris Versteeg, effective immediately.

The 33-year-old had only one assist in six games this year.

Versteeg was named captain prior to the IceHogs season opener at Iowa. He had become Rockford's first captain since Jake Dowell in 2017 and was the first time in his 14-year career Versteeg wore a letter on his sweater.

The two-time Stanley Cup champion had originally signed his contract to return to the Hogs back in April. It was his second stint with the organization and first time back in Rockford since 2008.

IceHogs general manager Mark Bernard praised Versteeg in a statement released Sunday morning.

"He will always be a member of our organization’s family and we wish him and his family all the best going forward.”
