VanVleet agrees to stay in Toronto, signs two-year deal with Raptors
ROCKFORD, Ill. (WIFR) -- With the start of free agency underway, Fred VanVleet wasted little time testing the market. The Rockford native has agreed to a two-year, $18 million deal to stay in Toronto, according to Yahoo Sports.
The now infamous tweet by VanVleet, "Bet on yourself" on the night he went undrafted in 2016, has paid off. The Raptors took a chance on the Auburn alumnus and in return, he played himself into a Sixth Man of the Year finalist. VanVleet averaged 8.6 PPG during the regular season.
Both he and front-office officials for Toronto went on-record saying they wanted to make a deal work. With the Phoenix Suns reportedly in hot pursuit of the restricted free agent, the two sides came to an agreement.
VanVleet made less than $2 million combined in his first two seasons in the NBA.
