Rockford immigrants come together through soccer

LOVES PARK, Ill. (WIFR) What started as a pipe dream and watching YouTube videos on how to coach soccer has become reality for one Rockford community.

More than 65 immigrants came together for a special soccer clinic at the MercyHealth Indoor Sports Center. Louis Mateus, better known for his work with the Rockford Raptors FC, is also the general manager of the sports complex. He was asked to help organize this event.

"Soccer was an avenue for me to get an education and also to be in the position I'm in", said Mateus. "So I use that moment. That's what got me into college, that's what landed me in Rockford, and that's why I'm here."

Mateus knows first hand what many of these kids are going through. He migrated from Portugal to the United States when he was 16-years-old.

The Rockford Park District is working with community members to integrate more immigrants into its programs.
