FREEPORT, Ill. (WIFR) Rock Valley bowling capped off its first season as a varsity sport with a Great Lakes Conference championship on Sunday.
The Golden Eagles knocked off defending NJCAA National Champion Highland in a best-of-five series at 4 Seasons Bowling Center in Freeport.
East grads Alex Wilson, Casey Kiefler and Sawyer Kiefler, Guilford grad Megan Peterson, Hononegah grad Brett Beuthin, and RVC softball champ Candace Kipp all played a role in the victory.
"We came here with the goal of making the playoffs and hoping to make a run," said head coach Tony Hall. "To actually make the run, I don't even know how to explain it. It's awesome."
"We were hoping to make the top eight playoff in which we did," said Beuthin. "We were expecting to maybe win our first match but we were not expecting to go all the way. It was hectic. It's crazy."
"We didn't know how far we'd make it," said Casey Kiefler. "We just threw one shot at a time and threw our best shot that we could. Yeah, we missed spares here and there but we never got down on ourselves. We always kept our attitude and we did it. I have no words other than to say that we did it. I'm proud of my team. I'm proud of my team."
Next up for RVC is the NJCAA Championship tournament, which will be held in Buffalo on March 1-2.
