ROCKFORD, Ill. (WIFR) There is no questioning Misty Opat's success while at Rock Valley with four national titles as the women's basketball coach and 13 in her tenure as athletic director, but her successor may be the best Golden Eagles coach during that nine year span.
Only Darin Monroe enjoyed more winning by leading the softball squad to five straight national championships and counting.
After conducting a nationwide search, RVC can now remove the interim tag from Monroe's title.
Over his seven seasons as the softball coach, Monroe has 314 wins and just 62 losses with six consecutive conference titles.
He says Opat laid down the groundwork and now it's his job to continue building the brand.
"My job now is to continue to raise the bar and I'm up for that challenge," said Monroe. "There's a lot of things that she did and the gaps that she bridged while she was here and fight the battles to get us to where we're at right now. My job is to continue that trend and hopefully move this program and the entire department towards national contention in hopefully eight different sports and to continue to build a brand that is Rock Valley College athletics."
