RVC hires Auburn's Watkins to lead women's program

ROCKFORD, Ill. (WIFR) Rock Valley College hired Auburn girls basketball head coach Darryl Watkins to lead its women's program.

Watkins guided the Knights for two seasons where they just had their best year since 2015 going 15-15 and 11-6 in the NIC-10.

"Auburn has allowed me to grow in my profession and be prepared for this step," said Watkins. "Being a collegiate head coach has been a dream of mine and having that opportunity to do that in my hometown, at a place that has such a rich tradition of winning at a high level, and an institution that has meant so much to me personally is surreal."

Watkins spent five seasons as an assistant under Misty Opat at RVC where the team won three national championships.

The Golden Eagles are coming off of a 25-6 season and N4C Conference Championship.
