Polo hoops nabs first regional title in a decade

DURAND, Ill. (WIFR) An emotional Polo squad celebrated its first regional championship in 10 years Friday night after beating Aquin 77-74.

The Marcos used 28 points from Braiden Soltow and 18 from Brady Webb to hold off the Bulldogs.

"It's been tough because we know we've been deserving of one," said Soltow. "We work hard and we really wanted this from the beginning. Ever since our freshman year, this is what we have wanted."

This was Polo's seventh straight 20-win season, but the first regional crown during that span.

"To see the look on their faces when we won that is just priceless," said head coach Matt Messer. "I'm so happy and so proud of this team for the effort."

"Last year, that really hurt," Webb said as he fought off tears. "I can't even describe what it's like right now. We worked so hard throughout the year. We deserved this and I'm ready to move onto the next round."

The Marcos will face off with River Ridge on Tuesday in the East Dubuque Sectional semifinals.
