Oregon wins first ever Big Northern championship in girls track

OREGON, Ill. (WIFR) Oregon shocked even itself with its performance Thursday at the Big Northern Conference girls track and field meet hosted by the Lady Hawks. They won their first ever BNC championship in the sport by 23 points.

Oregon won six of the 18 events, including three in the field. Head coach Nick Schneiderman said the field is the strength of the team. He was pleasantly surprised at how the meet went.

"We had to come in here and try to take care of business in the field events as we're supposed to and the girls showed it," said Schneiderman. "We don't fill all the events. We only had one two miler, we only had one vaulter. So being able to pull this off with a nice little 20-point cushion, that's pretty nice. The girls get all the credit."

One of those girls that put in the work on the track was Abigail Hopkins. The senior captain took home first in the 100 meter hurdles and second in the 300 meter hurdles. She was stunned by how the team performed.

"This is an absolute honor. Actually, at the beginning of the season, I really didn't think we would come as far as we have," said Hopkins. "So many improvements by the whole team. Like it's insane. Coming here tonight and really pushing ourselves to the max, because we've known that Dixon has been one of our biggest competitors. (Winnebago) and Dixon all the time. So coming out here tonight and just giving it our all 110% all the time. That's what we came here to do and that's what we did."
