Newman runs away from Nashville to claim 2A state championship

DEKALB, Ill. (WIFR) Despite being a four-seed in the playoffs, Newman rolled through the postseason and took care of business against Nashville to claim the Class 2A state championship 35-14 on Friday at Huskie Stadium.

The Comets gave up a total of 40 points during their run to the state title, while scoring 133.

Newman was outgained in the championship game 361-289, but the Comets led in time of possession by almost seven minutes.

Andrew Velasquez led Newman with 83 yards on the ground on 21 carries.

Jacob Ackman only threw the ball five times, but two of his three completions went to Connor McBride for touchdowns. McBride finished with 99 yards receiving.

It's Newman's first state championship since 2013.
