Just like his teammate Max Scharping, NIU defensive end Sutton Smith defied the pre-draft projections and was selected by the Pittsburgh Steelers in the sixth round at pick No. 175.
In his junior season, Smith became the first two-time All-American in school history and repeated as the Mid-American Conference Defensive Player of the Year. He also won the league's Vern Smith Leadership Award (MVP).
Smith recorded 30 sacks in his three seasons in DeKalb. He had a total of 139 tackles in 39 games played and scored four touchdowns in the last two years.
Smith will transition from defensive end to outside linebacker with the Steelers.
It's the ninth different time Northern Illinois has had multiple players drafted in the same year. The last time it happened was in 2014.
