NIU searches for answers on offense as Huskies fall in home opener to Utah

DEKALB, Ill. (WIFR) The Huskies were knocking on the door of a big program upset before Marcus Childers threw an interception returned 40 yards for a touchdown with 2:30 to play, sealing Northern Illinois' fate and a 17-6 loss to Utah on Saturday night at Huskie Stadium.

NIU played a near flawless game on defense, allowing a net total of just 68 yards on the ground while giving up ten points. The Huskies had six sacks in total, led by All-American Sutton Smith with two.

The offense, however, leaves much to be desired. Childers was 18-33, 111 yards and that interception at the end of the game. He was sacked three times. Northern Illinois rushed for 117 yards total net yards.

The Huskies have a home conference game next week against Central Michigan before going back on the road to Florida State on Sept. 22.
