DEKALB, Ill. (WIFR) NIU Men's Basketball knows it needs to be better on the road in 2018. With a lot of talent coming back, the Huskies believe they have the right pieces in place to compete for a conference championship.
Northern Illinois is just two years removed from a 21-win season, where they went 18-1 at home but just 3-12 outside of DeKalb.
NIU does have the luxury of returning all five starters, including Eugene German. The shooting guard was named to the All-MAC second team last year and led the conference in scoring with nearly 21 points per game. After talking with some scouts and flirting with the NBA Draft over the summer, the junior returns with a purpose.
"Without my teammates, I wouldn't be scoring the basketball like that," said German. "They push me every day to get better so when it comes times to hit the game-winners and things like that, I'm prepared for it."
"We love playing in front of our home crowd. We love our fans, we just got to get it together on the road. I feel like it's going to be a way bigger difference than last year on the road. We got a lot of second year guys, returners, so we know what to expect so we're going to be alright."
The Huskies get their season underway at home against Rockford Uuniversity on November 6.
