Freeport's Murray signs letter of intent to play softball at Illinois

FREEPORT, Ill. (WIFR) Freeport hosted a signing day event for softball player Taylor Murray on Wednesday.

The senior made her commitment to Illinois official when she signed her National Letter of Intent. She becomes the 23rd player under Pretzels head coach Chad Hersey to play at the next level and the first to go division one.

As a junior, Murray pitched in 22 games and had 122 strikeouts in 106 innings. She can also rake, totaling 14 home runs and 137 hits in her first three years at Freeport.

With a few other D1 offers on the table, Murray says the Fighting Illini were a perfect fit.

"Coach Perry is a great coach," said Murray. "I feel like the team that I'm going to be on is going to be a good team and we're going to be successful. Illinois just has a great program for me."

"Everybody talks about her as a pitcher but she can really play just almost any position," said Hersey. "She's a phenomenal athlete. I think people focusing on the pitching, (but) she hits better than anyone realizes. Probably most times (Murray's) the best athlete on the field."
