Lutheran puts up fight in third place match, loses in three sets

NORMAL, Ill. (WIFR) Lutheran showed the crowd inside Redbird Arena how much it was willing to fight, but lost to St. Joseph-Ogden in the 2A State Third Place match 11-25, 25-20, 23-25 on Saturday.

The Crusaders finished their first trip to state with a fourth place trophy after winning the program its first sectional title.

Junior Lauren Spangler led Lutheran with 15 kills in Saturday's defeat. Sophomore Kylie Wilhelmi was not far behind with 13 kills.

"We don't ever give up," said Kylie Wilhelmi. "Most teams when they're down 25-0, they stop. They don't come to the next set, they really don't. Surprisingly we find a way to push through, find a way to get back on top again and when we do dig ourselves a hole, because we dig them pretty deep, we normally don't ever stop and we don't ever give up. We have to make sure that we play every single point, we can't get ahead of ourselves and we know that we have to play for every single point. I'll remember how much we fought and how much we never give up."

Freshman Kayla Spangler recorded 35 assists while senior Katie Angel had a game-high 21 digs.
