ROCKFORD, Ill. (WIFR) Athletes have a platform that some of us do not normally have and one IceHog defenseman is using his time in the spotlight to bring attention to a disease which tried to take the life of a loved one.
Ian McCoshen will be growing his mustache as a part of Movember, which raises awareness for men's prostate cancer.
When he was a teenager, McCoshen's uncle was diagnosed with the disease and says he admired how hard he fought for his life.
The organization will be raising money on IceHogs.com throughout the month and McCoshen will be matching fan donations up to $1,500.
He says his participation in something like this has been long overdue.
"I just feel like I was sitting back the last three years and now I'm 24 so I'm trying to grow up a little bit," said McCoshen. "I'm just being responsible and just thinking what other people would do in this situation and I think they would probably match the donation if they had the funds to do so. I know a lot of other people would do the same thing if they were in my shoes so I'm just trying to do the right thing."
