DEKALB, Ill. (WIFR) Northern Illinois University was awarded a trip back to Florida for the 2018 Cheribundi Boca Raton Bowl after its come-from-behind victory in the Mid-American Conference championship Friday.
The Huskies (8-5) will play the University of Alabama-Birmingham (UAB), the champions of Conference USA. The game will take place on Tuesday, December 18 at Florida Atlantic University Stadium.
NIU will make its 10th bowl appearance in the last 11 seasons. The Huskies are 0-5 in bowl games since 2012 under head coach Rod Carey.
Carey released this statement in regards to the Cheribundi Boca Raton Bowl invitation.
“We’re really excited to go back to Boca Raton,” said Carey. “Last time we were there in the inaugural game it was a fantastic bowl experience. It’s part of the mission to be in a bowl every year and we’ve done that all but one year [since 2008], so I’m super happy for our seniors and our team. There is a part of this that is a reward for everything these student-athletes do, but the best part of it is we get to compete as a team together again.”
The Blazers finished the season with a program best 10-3 record and 7-1 in conference. UAB ranks 10th in the nation in total defense and 66th in total offense.
