MACHESNEY PARK, Ill. (WIFR) The girls track and field state championships take place this weekend on the campus of Eastern Illinois University. Harlem may have the team to bring home the school's first ever state trophy.
The Lady Huskies have been on a tear this season. The squad won its first NIC-10 title since 2010 and brought home the program's first ever sectional championship last weekend in Antioch. With 10 of the 18 events qualified for, Harlem has a real shot to make even more history.
"We're always so supportive of each other," said senior Olivia Lewis. "We go and watch everyone's events, that we can. So going with that mindset of us doing our absolute best, we know that we're contributing to the team."
Lewis is going to state for her fourth straight year, but she will have plenty of company this time around.
Another senior ready to make noise in Charleston is Catie Daily. She enters the prelims with the top discus distance in Class 3A. This will be Daily's third trip to the state meet.
"I'm just going to go in, just very calm and cool and try not worrying about my nerves or any of the pressure that I think that I might have," said Daily. "Just go in having fun."
There are other seniors that have zero experience at the state level. Katie Fare qualified in both the discus and shot put. With everything going their way as of late, Fare is excited about this opportunity.
"We have a big group, we have a talented group coming. Like Catie in the discus, me in the shot, Olivia in triple," said Fare. "We have literally everything going down besides a couple things. I definitely think it's going to be a fun experience. I think that if we all have good days, which I'm hoping for. It's supposed to be beautiful outside, then I think some good stuff is going to happen with it."
