MILWAUKEE, Wis. (WIFR) She was a star on the pitch and on the basketball court during her four years at Harlem, now McKaela Schmelzer gets ready for her fourth year at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee.
The former Huskie has started all 59 games in the first three seasons as a Panther. She was named Second Team All-Cconference and to Horizon League All-Tournament Team after the senior helped UWM win the conference championship and a trip to the NCAA tournament.
Schmelzer was also named to the league's Academic Honor Roll for the second straight year. Her head coach Troy Fabiano commended the two-sport athlete for getting it done on and off the field.
"I think she's just an amazing kid," said Fabiano. "If you think about just one sport, but to do both. Academically, I don't want to speak for her GPA, but I think it's 3.5-3.6. It just speaks about her work ethic. She's the type of player you have to pull back because she's not going to pull back."
"A lot of hard days, a lot of homework, a lot of everything," explained Schmelzer. "People are expecting me to do this, do that, but in the end, the coaches are great. Both soccer and basketball, they're willing to work with me. I'm just used to it by now, this is the fourth year."
