First Look Frenzy: Jefferson J-Hawks

ROCKFORD, Ill. (WIFR) It's been a rough go for Jefferson football as of late. The J-Hawks have only four wins since 2013 and have not had a winning season in 25 years. But that's in the past, Jfferson is looking to start fresh in 2018.

"The pieces are here. We just have to put it together and make sure that we expand on that."

Second year head coach Tony Ambrogio is not here to dwell on the past, but recognizes last year's last-minute coaching change may have had an effect on the J-Hawks. Jefferson went 0-9 for the fourth time in five seasons.

"I didn't think we were as bad as our record showed. I thought we were in a lot of football games, we just couldn't get over the hump," said Ambrogio. "So, hopefully this year we can turn the corner and win some football games."

Starting quarterback George Williams leads a junior-heavy J-Hawks squad in 2018.

"We have a better coaching staff this year, we're together, we're a lot more on the same page. We put last year aside and it's a new year this year."

There is no lack of confidence in the youth on this team. Raziel jefferson expects big things to happen this fall.

"We're just working hard, making sure we finish through. Finish every play, every drill like it's the fourth quarter or the last minute," said Jefferson. "Just trying to work hard, get better every day, just finish and get tougher and stronger."

For Jefferson to compete in the NIC-10, one word comes to mind for Ambrogio.

"We talk to the kids all the time just about being consistent," said Ambrogio. "So if we can get any kind of consistency and stability, I think we're starting to stabilize it, we'll be right there."
