NORMAL, Ill. (WIFR) Despite being down by ten at the half, Eastland ramped up the defense and came back to beat Lewistown 62-57 to win the Class 1A state championship on Saturday at Redbird Arena.
Eastland finished the season 34-3. The 34 wins are the most in program history. The Cougars also erase the memories of last year's state title loss, something senior Lydia Coatney said drove the team all year.
"Last year, everybody was in awe," said Coatney. "But this year, we had unfinished business to take care of and so we came in and took care of it."
The Cougars were led in scoring by first team All-State guard Erin Henze. The senior finished with 20, including shooting 4-6 from behind the arc.
"There's no better way to end the season then being state champs," said Henze. "For a team that's been playing together since we were (makes short gesture) this tall, I don't even know what to say. This has been our dream for as long as I can remember and here we are, it's finally happening."
