East returns to Rockford after first trip to state in 41 years

What East boys basketball did in 2019 will be remembered in the Rockford area for a very long time. So of course it was fitting for the team to return home like rock stars.

The E-Rabs were greeted by dozens of people along Charles Street on Sunday as a police and fire escort brought the boys back to the high school. East finished its historic season 34-4 while taking fourth place in IHSA Class 4A.

It was the first time in 41 years an E-Rabs team made it to state. While it has not all sunk in just yet for the seniors, they know they had a special season.

"I'm real humble right now," said Sha'den Clanton. "I really don't feel like all the accolades that we got, I don't feel like I'm accomplished yet. But I know in a few days it's all going to hit me."

"It was great. It was a once in a lifetime chance. It was the best opportunity we could get," said Chris Burnell. "You get to the dance floor, you got to showcase your abilities."

"Just the love out there and the support that everybody shows, it don't even matter if they're not your school, they're still going to support you. It's just a lot of love."
