ROCKFORD, Ill. (WIFR) East held off South Elgin 64-54 in the Class 4A Rock Valley Sectional final to win the school's first sectional championship since 2012.
The E-Rabs found themselves trailing by three after the first quarter, but the number one team in the sectional weathered the storm and outscored the Storm 30-15 between the second and third periods to take a 48-36 lead into the fourth.
South Elgin knocked down four straight three-pointers to cut the deficit to just four with under two to play, however East sank its free throws and drowned the Storm.
Senior Chris Burnell led the E-Rabs in scoring with 16. Sha'den Clanton helped with 14 and Sincere Parker poured in 13. South Elgin's Drake Montgomery led all scorers with 20.
Rebounding was the biggest difference in the game. East held a 43-27 advantage in that category.
The E-Rabs will play Geneva in Tuesday's Super-Sectional at Northern Illinois University's Convocation Center at 7:30.
