East honors Guttridge for state championship

ROCKFORD, Ill. (WIFR) For the last year, all East wrestler Aydin Guttridge could think about was barely missing out on state, but after a pretty good weekend in Champaign, there is nothing for the E-Rab senior to be second-guessing.

Guttridge became the first East wrestler since 1999 to win an individual state championship and the first ever as a heavyweight.

The senior stood in front of the entire school to receive a well-deserved applause from his classmates.

Guttridge says he would have never guessed this was how his high school career would end especially after how it started.

"I started off as an 0-8 wrestler my sophomore year to coming up a round short or a point short last year for getting to state," said Guttridge. "So this was my first year qualifying for state and I made it the money year. I finally won state. That was my dream to win state. That's why I think it was so emotional."
