Dixon beats Boylan to earn program's first ever sectional championship

SYCAMORE, Ill. (WIFR) Payton Lawrence did not have his ace stuff on Saturday, but it was good enough to strike out 12 Titans, helping Dixon beat Boylan 5-2 to win the Class 3A Sycamore sectional championship.

It's the first sectional plaque in the program's history.

Boylan was able to jump out to an early 1-0 lead before Dixon could bat, but a home run by Tucker Cole in the bottom half of the inning quickly tied things up.

The Titans have been playing with fire the last couple playoff games and finally got burned by the Dukes. After a pair of extra inning wins against Stillman Valley and Sycamore, Boylan could not overcome mental mistakes, errors and missed opportunities at the plate. Twice, the Titans had two-men on and could only manufacture one run off a wild pitch in the sixth.

Dixon did what has done all postseason long, strong pitching, timely hitting and play with confidence. The Dukes were aggressive on the basepath, scoring on an errant throw from Jakob Leombruni in a double steal attempt in the second to give them a 2-1 lead they would never give back.

After Lawrence dominated for six innings, Cole came in to shut things down in the seventh, getting all three outs via the strikeout.

Dixon now moves on to the Class 3A Super-Sectional at Augustana College in Rock Island Monday night. The Dukes will play Dunlap.
