Crusaders fall in state semifinals, will compete for third place

NORMAL, Ill. (WIFR) For the first time this postseason Lutheran could not climb out of an early hole as it fell to St. Teresa in the 2A State Semifinals 25-22, 29-27 Friday at Redbird Arena.

The Crusaders fell behind in both sets and despite having set-point three times, they could not force a third.

"It came down to those last couple of points and we just ran out of time," said head coach Jordan Haverly.

Junior Lauren Spangler led the team with 14 kills while sophomore Kylie Wilhelmi added 11 kills.

"Sometimes we just dig ourselves a hole," said Spangler. "In every single game anybody's watched us play, we always end up down by five points or so and something in us kicks in and we just fight back. But I guess we just fought back and they also fought too. We just gave away too many points in the beginning."

Kayle Spangler led Lutheran with 24 assists while Sarah Ziegler, Katie Angel and Remmington Vincent combined for five aces.

The Saders will take on St. Joseph-Ogden in the third place match Saturday afternoon.
