BYRON, Ill. (WIFR) Byron is ready to party this weekend like it's 1999.
The Big Northern champs head down to Champaign to play in the 3A state title game for the first time in 19 years.
The undefeated Tigers takes on a 13-0 Monticello squad which is fast on both sides of the ball with a talented quarterback.
Head coach Jeff Boyer knows a lot about being a QB for a state champion as he was under center for the tigers in '99 and he says this week is bringing back some memories.
"To be a coach and go to the state championship is a great thing, but also when you can come back to your alma mater and do that its something really special in the community," said Boyer. "It's been 18 years since we last got to do this. I found myself in the last few weeks getting a little bit choked up talking to the kids. They're accomplishing something that we were able to accomplish when we were in school and it's just nice to see them have the same experience that we had so I'm really proud of them and happy for them."
The Tigers take on the Sages Friday at 4 p.m. down in Champaign.
