LOVES PARK, Ill. (WIFR) Belvidere North came up just one goal short in its quest to pull off back-to-back playoff upsets. The Blue Thunder lost to top-seeded Boylan 1-0 on a cold and rainy afternoon at Wedgbury Stadium on Saturday.
Neither team was able to generate any real scoring threats in the first half, with Aidan Westerberg having North's best chance taken with under 15 to play in the first 40.
The Titans, however, controlled the play throughout the second half. Taylor Sowell almost broke scoreless match in the 51st minute, but the one-timer off the cross into the box hit the crossbar and went over the net.
Two minutes later, Boylan got that lone goal when North failed to clear the ball and Michael Koutsopanagos found the loose ball and found the back of the net.
The Titans won their second straight regional title and will now play in the Belvidere Sectional semifinals on Tuesday against Vernon Hills.
