Armato to become new Guilford boys basketball head coach

ROCKFORD, Ill. (WIFR) After finishing the 2018-19 season as interim head coach at Guilford, Carl Armato has accepted the full-time head coaching position with the Vikings pending a board approval.

Rockford Public Schools released a statement Friday stating Armato will take over the program for the 2019-20 season.

Armato took over as interim head coach in late January, replacing first year head coach Antonio Maestranzi. Maestranzi was arrested for driving under the influence on Jan. 29 and was later put on administrative leave.

Armato has worked as an assistant at Guilford since 2017. Before that, he was the men's basketball coach at Rock Valley College for 12 seasons from 1989-2001. He also spent time at Northern Illinois University as an assistant coach for the men's team from 2001-07 and an assistant for the women's program in 2008.
