ROCKFORD, Ill. (WIFR) – It was a scary scene for a local family when bullets fly into their home, sending their grandmother to the hospital.

A 74-year-old woman has a long road towards recovery after she was shot in the arm when bullets from a drive-by went through her house.

“Who would expect bullets to come through your house windows? Nobody expects that to happen. It’s scary. It’s scary that you’re not safe in your own home.”

It’s not hard to find the bullet holes in Juana Deleon’s home on Woodlawn Avenue. The 74-year-old great grandmother was inside Sunday night when she was shot, police say an innocent victim in a drive-by.

“Officers are trying to find out if there was some other person or vehicle of interest out here that was the primary target,” says Lt. John Pozzi with the Rockford Police Department.

Granddaughter Judy Aguayo says Deleon was standing right in front of her when the bullets came flying in.

“She saved my life because that bullet would have gone straight into my head,” says Aguayo.

Aguayo tried getting her to the ground, but it was too late.

“When I grabbed her, I saw the blood on my clothes and I said ‘are you alright’ and she said ‘call the ambulance, I’m hit.’”

Aguayo says her grandmother was hit in the arm. The bullet then collapsed her lung and damaged her liver. She needs a blood transfusion but is expected to survive, however it may take some time until Deleon is back to normal.

“My grandma is always doing something. She does not like to stay sitting. She’s a real, real sweet-hearted person,” says Aguayo.

Now, Deleon’s family wants justice. Anyone who may know anything is asked to come forward.

Police say they’re looking for a light colored four-door vehicle.
