WINNEBAGO COUNTY, Ill. (WIFR) – As people prepare to make plans for St. Patrick’s Day weekend so are police across Winnebago County.

The Winnebago County State’s Attorney’s Office announced a special traffic detail that will take place over the holiday weekend, keeping drunk and impaired drivers off the roads.

It’s also being called a “No Refusal” weekend, meaning anyone who refuses to submit to a breathalyzer will automatically be transported to the Winnebago County Jail.

The State’s Attorney’s Office will then get a search warrant to collect the driver’s blood. If that person continues to refuse they could face obstruction of justice charges in addition to any DUI charges.

“Everybody likes to have Irish in them this weekend, go out and have a good time, support businesses, visit family, however if you’re going to drink, don’t drive,” says Rockford Police Chief Dan O’Shea.

Last year, Winnebago County participated in another “No Refusal Weekend” over the Fourth of July holiday.
