Winnebago County looks for more ways to help families who lose their pets.

The county has teamed up with PetHub.com to offer a new smart ID tag for cats and dogs. PetHub's system allows pet owners to link a QR code to the back of an animal's ID tag.

The code links to the animal's online profile. If you scan it with a mobile device, the profile comes up with emergency contact information that may not be displayed on the tag.

“ID tags on a collar are one of the best ways to ensure your pet makes it safely home again and we’re excited about the technology PetHub.com tags add to the equation," said Brett

Frazier, Administrator of Winnebago County Animal Services.

The new pet tags were launched earlier in the year. Only animals living in Winnebago County are eligible for the new ID tags.
