Winnebago County inmates get GEDs with help from tablet courses

ROCKFORD, Ill. (WIFR) -- With the help from technology, 11 inmates in Winnebago County have been able to receive their GED certificates this year.

The Winnebago County Sheriff's Office introduced tablets to the inmates two years ago, which offered courses to help inmates earn certificates during their time in jail. The opportunity comes as partnership between the sheriff's office and Rock Valley College.

While wearing caps and gowns, three graduates received their diplomas on Tuesday.

"We come together as one and help each other because we all try to see each other strive to get things done," says graduate Sanford Marzette. "So that's what made us family together."

Sheriff Gary Caruana says this opportunity helps the inmates when they leave jail as contributing member of society.
