WINNEBAGO COUNTY, Ill. (WIFR) - Nationwide, the flu continues to be an epidemic taking the lives of more than 30 children so far this year. Experts say there are certain steps we can take to make sure we are best protecting ourselves

Similar to the rest of the country, the local number of flu cases is also on the rise in Winnebago County. The health department recommends we follow to the three c's to stay healthy: clean, cover and contain. That means frequent handwashing and covering our mouths when coughing or sneezing

"Staying at home from work or school or other activities when you're ill. And of course, we always say it's not too late to vaccinate. While not 100% effective it provides a significant amount of protection, and we need our population to understand they can do something even though the numbers are increasing," says Dr. Sandra Martel, of the Winnebago County Health Department.

Health experts say in addition to getting a flu shot, avoid crowded areas as much as possible to lower your chances of catching the flu.
