WINNEBAGO COUNTY, Ill. (WIFR) -- In observance of National Flag Week, Winnebago County organizations are teaming up to collect American flags for retirement.

You can donate worn and dilapidated flags for retirement at the Winnebago County Clerk's Office at 404 Elm Street or Veterans Memorial Hall at 211 N. Main Street. Flags will be collected from Monday to Friday.

“The American flag is a patriotic and important symbol of the United States and should be treated with the utmost respect,” said Winnebago County clerk Lori Gummow.

Those who donate a flag will be entered into a drawing for a new flag.

National Flag Week runs from June 9, 2019 to June 15, 2019. Flag Day will be observed Friday, June 14.

The president has issued a proclamation urging citizens to fly the American flag for the duration of the week.
