Walmart Boycott from Freedom Movement USA

A little over a week ago, Walmart announced that it will stop selling handgun and short-barrel rifle ammunition, while requesting that customers not openly carry firearms in its stores, even where state laws allow it.

The Freedom USA group, with the Will County Young Republicans, planned protests to boycott Walmart stores all around the country today. Over the course of the last week, their team organized a national boycott that attempts to reach 26 states with over 322,000 signatures on their boycott proclamation.

Today, many protests were held, including one in Joliet, Illinois and another in Plainfield. After all of the news spread about Walmart's announcement last week, nearly 4 million people in a matter of 3 days after announcing the protests last week.

These protests come on the heels of a mass shooting at a Walmart store in El Paso, Texas back in August, claiming 22 lives. While the protests did not have a presence in Rockford, local shoppers ay that there are other places ammunition can be purchases, even though Walmart contributed towards 20% of ammo purchases.

Dave Steele, a local Walmart shopper says that while people may have to look for another place to purchase ammunition, he says there are plenty. He says, "There are other outlets for gun sellers and ammunition sales. I mean it is a free market, they can do whatever they want. They can dictate whatever they want to sell or don't sell. There will always be someone to pick up that slack. Which is fine because that's how democracy and free market works."

The Freedom Movement USA group is planning more protests in October, and even more protests at a wider scale in over 26 states planned on November 8th around the country.
