Volunteers needed to rebuild Kids Ground in Rochelle

ROCHELLE, Ill. (WIFR) -- Volunteers prepare to get elbow-deep in dirt in an effort to help rebuild the former Kids Ground structure at Rochellle's Cooper Park.

Starting Thursday, volunteers will begin work on a new playground for the park. The last one, which was knocked down earlier this year, was built in 1991 and made from wood.

The new playground will instead be a composite structure, which typically last longer. To help save funds and get the community involved, the Flagg-Rochelle Community Park District is asking for help from volunteers.

"Play By Design suggests we have 90 volunteers per shift. We have approximately 40 right now and we're still looking for more," said Jackie Ohlinger, executive director of the Flagg-Rochelle Community Park District. "It's going to be a great experience, it's going to have rewards that remain for years to come."

You can help build the playground from June 20-25. The park district seeks volunteers from shifts at the following times:

8 a.m. to noon
12:30-4:30 p.m.
5-8:30 p.m.

If you would like to volunteer, you can text "Kids Ground" to 81010.
