Victim identified from fatal shooting near SwedishAmerican

ROCKFORD, Ill. (WIFR) -- The victim of a fatal shooting near SwedishAmerican on Tuesday afternoon has been identified.

Joseph Hernandez, a 20-year-old Rockford man, was identified as the victim.

The Winnebago County Coroner's Office says the preliminary cause of Hernandez's death was a gunshot wound.

Quinton Smith, 23, of Rockford, was arrested and charged​ with first-degree murder hours after the shooting. He also faces charges for aggravated battery with a firearm and unlawful use of a weapon.

Police say Hernandez was in an argument with the suspect that led to fatal gunfire. Police say the incident is not at random.

The suspect then allegedly chased the victim in the 1300 block of State Street. The victim was taken to a hospital and died as of a result of his injuries.

Police say the victim was trying to enter the vehicle of another a 23-year-old woman, who was also shot and taken to the hospital. Her injuries are non-life-threatening.

Rockford Police Chief Dan O'Shea says officers responded to ShotSpotter alerts in the 100 block of Adams Street in Rockford around 5:45 a.m.

In a follow-up investigation, Smith was found at a home in the 700 block of Royal Avenue around 1:30 p.m.

Smith is being held in Winnebago County Jail on a $2 million bond. He is considered innocent unless proven guilty by the court of law.

The death is under investigation from Rockford Police.
