Vacant house fires leaves residents worried

ROCKFORD, Ill (WIFR)--- Fire investigators believe a vacant house fire before four Monday morning was arson leaving neighbors worried.

"I woke up to a bunch of fire trucks sitting in my street," says neighborhood resident Jose Maldonado.

The Rockford Fire department responded to the fire within in four minutes.

"The cause of the fire has been determined incendiary and we'll be investigating it as an arson fire," says Rockford Fire department investigator, Chris Tumeo.

What's more worrisome to residents is the vacant house next door to the initial vacant house fire was also in flames.

"These house are part of the Red X program, so that means these houses were not safe for people," says Tumeo.

It also means that these vacant houses have structural damage. Maldonado says these homes have been vacant for over two years.

The Rockford Fire department advises people to contact them with any information about a vacant home.
