U-Haul takes over Rockford Kmart, 12 other retail stores

ROCKFORD, Ill. (WIFR) -- Months after shutting its doors, the Kmart on 5909 E. State Street will soon become a multi-purpose facility for U-Haul.

AMERICO Real Estate Co., a real estate division of U-Haul, has acquired thirteen vacant Kmart and Sears stores in a $62 million deal, according to a report​ from Square Foot.

U-Haul plans to use the new facilities for storage and moving, but the company has not confirmed when it plans to transform its new facilities.

Sears, the company that owns Kmart, plans to sell more than 500 stores between the two retailers after the giant filed for bankruptcy in October.

According to court documents filed in Sears Holdings’ federal bankruptcy case, the stores being purchased include:
