Two men busted on drug charges, one tries to escape Rockford traffic stop

ROCKFORD,Ill. (WIFR) -- Two men were arrested on drug charges after one reportedly tried to escape a traffic stop Tuesday night.

Jerome Garrett, 31, allegedly led officers on a brief chase while Charles Lewis, 39, stayed in the car.

Police say the vehicle was speeding westbound on Harrison Avenue near 11th Street. Officers tried to conduct a stop near South Main Street before the car eventually pulled over on Clifton Avenue.

While investigating, officers recovered a plastic bag containing more than 40 pills, believed to be Ecstasy. Police also found several white rocks believed to contain cocaine, a small amount of a cannabis, and U.S. currency.

Garrett was charged with possession with intent to deliver cocaine, possession with intent to deliver a controlled substance and resisting/obstructing an officer.

Lewis was charged with possession with intent to deliver cocaine, possession with intent to deliver a controlled substance and fleeing to elude. He also faces several traffic charges and a citation for cannabis.

Garrett and Lewis were taken to Winnebago County Jail. They are considered innocent unless proven guilty by the court of law.
